Blocked Drains
When drainage systems are designed and installed correctly, blockages are significantly reduced and minimised. Blockages occur when the initial pipework carried out has deteriorated, or when foreign objects are lodged in the pipe causing an obstruction for water to flow freely.

Common Causes of Blockages
-
Tree and Plant Roots
Trees and plants are in constant pursuit of moisture in the ground. For this reason, underground pipework is particularly vulnerable to root systems as they try to enter the pipework at any failed joints or cracks. Once a root enters the pipework, they continue to grow, causing blockages to your drains, which can result in costly damages to your house. Tree roots can be cut out of the pipe using our pipe cleaning techniques; however, they will continue to grow back and cause even more damage if a permanent solution is not installed.
-
Broken or collapsed pipework
Pipework generally last 25 years. Consequently, many pipework that was installed over 25 years ago has now reached its effective use date, and rehabilitation or replacement may be required. In some cases, the damage has already occurred, and the genuine wear and tear of the pipe may cause it to break or collapse, resulting in expensive fixes, and blockages that may damage your house.
-
Pouring oil and grease down the drain
When oils from cooking are poured down the kitchen sink, parts of these oily substances solidify in the pipework. As the liquid travels down the pipe, it cools down, resulting in a thick grease layer forming on the inner diameter of the pipe. The inner diameter of the pipe gets thinner and thinner as more grease solidifies, resulting in less liquid passing through and increased likelihood of blockages. To avoid this, limit oily substances being poured down the drain. If your sink is slow to drain or gurgles, this is a symptom of a blockage.
-
Flushing the wrong thing down the toilet
Flushing anything but toilet paper down the toilet will cause blockages in the drain or sewer. Household goods such as nappies/diapers, napkins, wet wipes, and sanitary products do not decompose, and will prevent anything flushed after it to pass through.
-
Foreign objects entering the drainage system
Foreign objects such as toys, balls, leaves, sand, rubbish and other solid materials are often found in both sewer and stormwater systems. Pipe blockages and further damage to your house can occur if unresolved.

Blocked drains can be caused by various factors, including the accumulation of grease, hair, soap scum, food particles, foreign objects, tree root intrusion, and mineral deposits. These materials can restrict the flow of water through the pipes, leading to blockages.
-
To prevent blocked drains, it's essential to practice proper waste disposal by avoiding flushing non-flushable items, such as wipes and sanitary products, down the toilet. Regular drain maintenance, including using drain covers to catch debris and avoiding pouring grease down the sink, can also help prevent blockages.
-
While some minor blockages can be cleared using DIY methods, such as plungers or drain snakes, more severe blockages or those caused by tree roots or mineral deposits may require professional assistance. Attempting to clear a blocked drain yourself could potentially worsen the problem or cause damage to the pipes.
-
Signs of a blocked drain include slow drainage, foul odors emanating from drains, gurgling sounds coming from pipes, water backing up in sinks or toilets, and visible signs of water pooling around drains. If you notice any of these signs, it's important to address the issue promptly to prevent further damage.
